Shields are off-hand equipment that use Defence as their primary stat, which is doubled on roll. This means that due to this quirk shields effectively have twice the maximum primary stat listed here. Shields are more commonly used by Knights, since Defence is one of their most common focuses, but it may also be used by Mages and Shamans that are looking for more survivability.

Shields also increase the number of enemies you can have attacking you simultaneously without ignoring your damage reduction and resistances by 1, bringing the value up to 3. In practice, this means you can tank 3 monsters with a shield and 2 without one without monsters breaking through your defence. This is what "+1 Attacker" on shields means.
